Experienced IGS users may want to check out this page: How Do I ...?
The Go Assisant provides several features to make interaction
with the IGS server simple. Point and clic
k commands provide easy
access to players, games and related information on the server.
The client has built in functions for watching the state of the
connection to the server. This allows for the user to determine
quickly wether the server and client are communicating and that
any games being played are properly aligned (the server is on the
same move as the client.) The Go Assistant also provides a
window's based interface for communicating with other users on
the IGS server. When you communicate
with another player the
client opens a window for exclusive communications with that
player. When using a chat window, you simply type the message you
desire to send to the other player and the client appends the
neccessary igs command syntax.
Getting Started with IGS
provides a brief step by step set of instructions for getting
onto IGS with The Go Assistant and how to find opponents.
Following these instructions should have you on the IGS server
wi
thin moments.
Connection to IGS is built around a document which is stored as a file on your computer. This document contains the information neccassary for The Go Assistant to logon to the IGS server and information for establishing and maintaining the connection to IGS. A connection document contains several properties which you can set when you create the document and modify later as your needs dictate. Access to the propertie s is through the Edit Properties menu command. (Note: the IGS Server Window must be active to edit the properties for that particular document.)
The main window consists of four different views: terminal, users, games and known users. The terminal window allows you to send standard IGS text commands to the Server. The users window displays all the current users on the server and some related information. The games window displays the current games being played on the server. The known users window contains a list of other players who you have met or know of on IGS.
The main window also contains a control bar with buttons for
easily switching between these windows, and performing general
IGS Commands. The SIGN ON button signs you on to IGS and when
signed on changes to a SIGN OFF button (which will sign you off
of IGS.) The REFRESH button tells the client to update the
information associated with the current IGS window being shown.
If the Games View is active then REFRESH will clear the games
listed and get the latest list from the Server. The RESET button
will reset the internal state of the client. Included with these
buttons is a drop down edit list. This edit list will contain a
list of all the stored games you currently have on the IGS
server. By simply selecting one of these games, the client will
inform the server to load and restart the game. This may fail if
the other player is not logged on or involved in another game.
When the IGS window is active, information is displayed at the
bottom of the Go Assistants main frame to inform the user of the
current state of the connection with IGS.
All the view windows consisting of a list of entities (like the user window) will have several columns, you can sort the information in this window by simply pressing the mouse button while the cursor is over the columns title. If the column is already the current sort for this window, the information will be sorted in the other direction.
