Communication with other Users

Global Communication

There are several ways to communicate with other players. You can use the shout stream, private chat or the game chat room as a means of conversing with other players logged onto the server. The shout stream has its own window. This window will display all the messages sent to the shout stream by the various users of IGS. (Note: Some users deliberatly turn off their shout stream and will not see any messages sent to it.) To send a message to the shout stream, simply make the Shout Stream window your active window and type a message into it. After typing the message, hit the return key and your message will be sent to the Server shout stream. Any messages typed by other users will be displayed in the Shout Stream window with their name and IGS rank preceding the message.

Private Communication

You can privately communicate with other users using a tell window. A tell window will have the name of the user you are communicating with in it's title. There are several ways to create a tell window. The most common way is to find a user in the User window of the Internet Server Document window. After finding the handle of the user you are interested in, right click on their handle and select Talk To from the menu that comes up. This will create a Tell window for the selected user. To communicate with that user, simply type in the new tell window. After typing in your message, hit return and your message will be sent to the user.

Any user can communicate directly with you. When they send you a message, it will be displayed in a tell window with the name and their rank in the title of the window. If this window already exists, the new message is displayed in that window; otherwise, a new window will be created.

Tell windows can also be created through the shout window, known user window and any game commentary window. Simply by selecting a user name from one of these windows, you can right click and select Talk To from the drop down menu that comes.

Game Commentary

Any game in which you are playing or watching, you can converse with the other people watching the game. Simple type while the game board is active and your message will be sent to the Game Commentary window for that game. After typing in your message, send it to the other users by hitting the return key.

Channels

IGS has another forum for easy communication between users. Channels allow a group of users to communicate as a small subset of the larger IGS community. The interface for communicating through Channels is still under development. But you can use the following methods to communicate in a particular channel.
